Statement of Solidarity with Heaton Park Synagogue
October 02, 2025
In light of the tragic events in Manchester today, Brighton and Hove Faith in Action (BHFA) stands in deep sorrow and solidarity with the Jewish community and all those affected. The horrifying terrorist attack at the Heaton Park Synagogue, carried out on Yom Kippur — the holiest day in the Jewish calendar — has left us all shocked and heartbroken. We mourn the loss of those who were killed, we pray for the recovery of those seriously injured, and we hold in compassion the families, friends, and community members grieving in this moment of profound pain.
This act of terror, striking at a place of worship during a sacred time, is an attack not only on the Jewish community but on the very values of safety, dignity, and mutual respect that we as a society must uphold together. Antisemitism and hatred in all its forms have no place in our communities.
We commend the swift action of the emergency services and the authorities working to protect lives and ensure safety. At the same time, we call on all members of the public to resist fear and division, and to stand firmly against those who would exploit this tragedy to spread further hatred.
Though we represent diverse faith traditions, we agree that the only way to overcome violence is through compassion, unity, and peace. BHFA reaffirms its commitment to fostering multifaith cooperation, friendship and solidarity, and we urge all people of goodwill to support their Jewish neighbours, reject antisemitism, and work for a society rooted in justice and understanding.
In these dark days, may we hold fast to hope. May the memories of those who have died be for a blessing. May those injured and grieving be surrounded with care and love. And may we honour the lives lost by consciously building communities of peace where people of all faiths and backgrounds can live together in safety.
