Faith Groups Against Anti-Migrant Activity - Resources
September 03, 2025

In recent weeks the UK media has been focused on asylum seekers being housed in hotels, sparking political and social confusion and debate over how to respond to boat-crossings in the English Channel.
In a BBC article on the asylum hotels situation in Sussex, Brighton and Hove City Council’s deputy leader Cllr Jacob Taylor said, "As a proud city of sanctuary we will always play our role in housing asylum seekers and providing a welcome and support to those fleeing persecution and horrific circumstances which many of us can thankfully only imagine."
At BHFA, we know that it can be overwhelming to comprehend the complexities of migration and assist in genuinely helping asylum seekers in our communities, and leading our faith congregations into understanding and compassion in place of suspiscion and fear.
Equally, it can seem impossible to separate media fact and fiction, and with that in mind, we want to highlight the excellent collection of resources which has been assembled by our dear friends at Community Works, accessible here: https://www.communityworks.org.uk/whats-new/solidarity-against-anti-migrant-activity/
We have found the following information very informative for getting to the facts behind the headlines:
- ’Fact-Checking Asylum - Evidence over misconception’ by Raj Burman
- Rescue’s 11 myths and misconceptions about refugees debunked
- Refugee Action’s Facts about Refugees (which includes a quiz)
- Refugee Action’s report Hostile Accommodation which highlighted the reality of the accommodation and treatment of asylum seekers in the UK, finding it to be ’cruel by design’.
