Bondi attack - Messages from our Trustees

December 14, 2025

In response to the terrible shooting attack on people celebrating the start of Chanukah on Bondi Beach, Sydney, Australia, Brighton and Hove Faith in Action Trustees Stuart Diamond and Sabri ben Ameur issue the following statements:

Stuart Diamond

We are sending our deepest prayers and condolences to the survivors and to the families of those who were murdered.

In the midst of this tragedy, inspiring videos are emerging that showcase the extraordinary heroism of bystanders who bravely confronted and disarmed the attackers.

The Jewish community here in Sussex would especially welcome your support this week as they celebrate Chanukah. We encourage all members of our faith communities to reach out or attend a local Chanukah lighting ceremony to show solidarity and support. Your presence and encouragement would be deeply valued.

Brighton and Hove Muslim Forum Condemns Violence and Stands with Jewish Community in Australia

The Brighton and Hove Muslim Forum condemns all acts of violence against any human being. We send our deepest condolences and solidarity to the Jewish community in Australia following the horrific Chanukah attack in Bondi Beach.

We are particularly moved by the actions of a Muslim shopkeeper in Bondi who stood in defence of Jewish people who helped disarm the gunman, suffering two gunshot wounds in the process. His bravery is a powerful reminder that solidarity and humanity transcend faith.

At times like these, communities must unite against hatred, antisemitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of extremism. We stand shoulder to shoulder with our Jewish brothers and sisters in Australia and here in Sussex, committed to peace, mutual respect, and shared humanity.

Condolences

We especially send love and condolences to Rabbi Zalman Lewis of Chabad Brighton whose cousin Rabbi Eli Schlanger was killed in this attack. Our thoughts and prayers are with the whole family and community who have been affected by this heinous attack.
