BNJC host faith leaders together

July 23, 2024

In a notable demonstration of unity and social action, the Brighton and Hove Jewish Community Centre (BNJC) recently hosted an interfaith event aligned with Mitzvah Day’s theme of "Stronger Together." (read report in the Jewish Chronicle here) The gathering saw 25 faith leaders, including an imam, several rabbis, a bishop, a monk, and various Christian ministers, join forces to support local individuals in need. The event featured a shared interfaith dinner and discussions, culminating in the creation of care packages for St Peter’s Brighton, which manages Safehaven drop-ins for the vulnerable.

Marc Sugarman, CEO of BNJC, praised the collaboration, emphasizing the significant impact of such collective efforts in social action. Stuart Diamond, CEO of Mitzvah Day, echoed these sentiments, highlighting how the event exemplified the power of interfaith cooperation and community support, sending a strong message of solidarity and compassion across Brighton & Hove.

Brighton & Hove Faith in Action Chair Rik Child also underscored the importance of the event, noting that the diverse group of faith communities involved—including Christians, Jews, Sikhs, Muslims, and Buddhists—demonstrates their collective commitment to improving the lives of local residents. With Mitzvah Day scheduled for November 24, this initiative reflects a broader movement where over 55,000 people globally engage in acts of kindness and support for their communities each year.
